TRAVEL TIPS

Timing

Both Chiado and Bairro Alto are remarkably compact, and it takes little time to walk from one end to the other; an hour would cover it. But once you start diving off into the side streets and lingering in the shops, galleries, and bars, you'll find you can happily spend a morning or afternoon here (or a night in the case of the late-opening Bairro Alto). After midnight the streets get very busy, especially on weekends, when seemingly half of Lisbon comes here to eat, drink, and party.
