Getting Here and Around

Chiado is served by the Baixa-Chiado metro station, with a series of escalators bearing passengers up under Rua Garrett to Largo do Chiado. Tram 28 rumbles through here, on its way between the Baixa and Estrela. Farther uphill, Bairro Alto can be reached by the Elevador de Santa Justa elevator or the Elevador da Glória funicular, which steams up from a standing start on Praça dos Restauradores, at the start of the Avenida da Liberdade, the city’s modern central axis. Another approach to Bairro Alto is from Rato metro station, passing the Jardim Botânico and the Jardim do Príncipe Real on the way. Head this way for super-chic shopping at the grand Embaixada gallery of upscale boutiques.
